What is involved in a lawn renovation?

Updated: May 17, 2022

Are you looking at your lawn and thinking it's beyond repair? Fear not! There's almost always a way to bring even the most destitute lawn back to life and a full lawn renovation, whilst sometimes daunting, can make huge differences in just a few months.

Here is an example of a lawn renovation, which underwent a full transformation from a neglected lawn into lush green grass in just four months.

This lawn had been neglected for some time and had become tangled and matted with significant thatch build up. This work took place in late October.

The lawn was mown really short in preparation.

The first step of the refurbishment was to hollow-tine aerate in order to oxygenate the soil and alleviate the compaction.

Next it was scarified hard to remove as much thatch, moss and organic debris as possible.

And then scarified again… this also helps thin the heavily matted sward and prepare the soil for seed.

The lawn was then overseeded with a high quality rye based mixture.

And then dressed with loam top soil, which helps protect the seed and gives it a safe environment in which to grow.

Finally a pre-seeding fertiliser was applied to provide nutrition for the seedling grass and some rudimentary bird scarers put in place to keep the pigeons off!

After one week

After two weeks

Germination of the new seed took place about 12 days in

After three weeks

After four weeks

Early Spring the following year

And a couple of weeks after an Early Season fertiliser

This photo taken in March, just four months after the lawn renovation began. You can very clearly see the difference between the refurbished area and the untreated patch at the far end. The grass has developed well and the lawn has great colour and a lovely thick lawn is developing. Now it's just a case of ongoing care and maintenance to keep the lawn in great condition.
